You Do Not Need To Love Exercise. You Just Need To Find Your Thing.

You Do Not Need To Love Exercise. You Just Need To Find Your Thing.

Here is something the fitness industry does not say enough: the gym is not for everyone. This is not permission to do nothing. It is permission to do something different. The people who move consistently, who actually look forward to it, who do it week after week for years - they almost all have one thing in common. They found something they genuinely enjoy.

Not something they tolerate. Not something they endure because they read they should. Something they would do anyway, whether or not it burned calories. If you have started and stopped three gym memberships, it is not a willpower problem. It is a matching problem. You just haven't found your thing yet.

Start with what you already like. Before we talk about reformer Pilates or zone 2 cardio, here's a more useful question: what do you like doing when you are not thinking about exercise? Do you like being outside? Start there. A running club or a long walk with a good podcast has more in common with something you already enjoy than a gym session ever will.

Do you like socialising? Team sports, group classes, park runs - the social element is the thing that keeps people coming back far more reliably than any fitness goal.

Do you like music? A dance class, a spin class, anything with a playlist - you will be surprised how much more you move when you genuinely like the soundtrack.

Do you like feeling calm? Swimming, yoga, Pilates - all of them deliver a nervous system regulation that is hard to find anywhere else. The movement you do is infinitely better than the movement you don't.

The options worth trying...

Parkrun

Free, every Saturday morning, 5km, 800+ locations in the UK. You can walk it. You can run it. You can do it alone or with someone. The community is genuinely one of the warmest things in British sport. If you've been thinking about starting running, this is where to start.

Our top picks:

Brockwell Parkrun (Brixton), Victoria Park Parkrun (Hackney), Bushy Park Parkrun (Teddington - the original and still the best atmosphere).

Reformer Pilates

It had a moment and then it kept going because it works. Pilates builds strength, improves posture, is low impact enough that you can do it with an injury, and has a habit-forming quality that's hard to explain until you've experienced it. It's not cheap, but it's consistent.

Our top picks:

Reformer Collective - one of the most considered reformer studios in London, with a community feel that most boutique studios charge a premium to replicate and then don't quite deliver. The programming is intelligent, the spaces are beautiful and the instructors are genuinely excellent. This is the one we keep coming back to.

Heartcore Pilates - multiple London locations with regular intro offers and class bundles that make reformer genuinely accessible without compromising on quality. A great starting point if you're new to it.

Walking clubs

Less niche than they sound and significantly more social. The evidence for walking as a health intervention is overwhelming - 8,000 steps a day makes a measurable difference to cardiovascular health, mood and sleep quality. Finding a walking group turns it into an event.

Our top picks:

The London Hiking Club - organised routes, social events, mix of distances. Feels more like a lifestyle club than a walking group.

Walk London - the official TfL backed walking routes across the city. Seven themed long-distance routes, completely free, self-guided, genuinely excellent.

Swimming

The most underrated form of exercise. Full body, low impact, almost meditative when you get into a rhythm. If you find yourself stressed and depleted, there is something about cold water and lengths that resets things in a way very little else does.

Our top picks:

Lido at Tooting Bec - outdoor lido, one of the most iconic swim spots in London, membership is surprisingly reasonable for year-round access.

Better Leisure Centres - council run pools across all London boroughs, swim sessions from around £4-5. Better app makes booking easy.

A class, any class

Spin, barre, boxing, dance cardio. The barrier to entry is low: you show up, someone tells you what to do, the music carries you through it. If you hate it, try a different one. The format is the thing that works, not the specific discipline.

1Rebel - the boutique fitness brand that does Reshape (strength) and Ride (spin) better than almost anyone in London. Expensive per class but the production quality is genuinely excellent.

MoveGB - a membership that gives you access to hundreds of London studios and gyms for a flat monthly fee. The most cost-effective way to try multiple class formats without committing to one.

HYROX

For when you want a goal. HYROX is a functional fitness competition that has exploded in the last three years because it gives regular people an event to train for. Not a marathon. Not a triathlon. Something that fits into a normal life while giving you something to work towards.

Fiit x HYROX training plans - official HYROX training programmes you can follow at any gym, structured 12-week plans.

HYROX Gym Finder - the official finder to locate HYROX-affiliated gyms and training spaces in London.

The thing that actually makes it stick

Goals help. Structure helps. A good playlist helps. But the single most reliable predictor of whether someone keeps moving consistently is whether they're doing it with other people.A training partner, a running club, a class you book in advance, a group chat - the social accountability that comes with doing it alongside someone is more powerful than any amount of motivation.Book the class. Tell someone you're going. Turn up.The rest tends to follow.

This is exactly the kind of consistency that SANA is built around rewarding. Not perfection. Not elite performance. Just showing up, week after week, in whatever form that takes for you. When you move, sleep well and recover - The SANA app tracks it and turns it into real rewards at brands you love. Because healthy habits deserve more than just the feeling of having done them.
